Survivor? That name is misleading. Westerners like to use that word. They also use word "helper", which is not only misleading but also denigrating. In occupied Poland there were rescuers and rescued. It's as simple as that.I think that Westerners tried to understand such stories. They looked for comparisons in their own culture. That's what humans do. And they made a mistake. It's a human thing. At least I hope it was a mistake. If I understand correctly, "survivor" is someone who survives on his own. Some castaway on tropical island. Sunny beach, trees heavy with fruit. And some funny savage to domesticate. For some reasons "survivor" has no equivalent in polish language. Poland is no tropical island. Mira Wexler is no Crusoe. Helena Węglowska is not her Friday.
